JIS SS490 vs SM490 Steel Plate: Key Differences for Buyers

SS490 and SM490 are two Japanese steel grades commonly considered for structural engineering projects. Although their names are similar and both can be used in steel structures, they belong to different Japanese Industrial Standards and should not be treated as interchangeable without checking the project requirements.

SS490 is specified in JIS G 3101, which covers rolled steels for general structure. It is commonly used in general structural fabrication, industrial facilities, machinery supports, and other applications where the specified properties meet the design requirements.

SM490 belongs to JIS G 3106, which covers rolled steels for welded structures. It is designed for structural applications where welding performance and the requirements of welded construction are important. SM490 also has different grade classifications and may be supplied under specific requirements for chemical composition, mechanical properties, and testing.

For buyers, the key difference is not simply the strength level. The applicable standard, material requirements, plate thickness, welding procedures, and project specifications all influence whether a grade is suitable. Even when two grades have comparable strength values, their other requirements may differ.

Before purchasing, buyers should check the engineering drawings and confirm whether the project specifically requires SS490 or SM490. If an alternative grade is proposed, the substitution should be reviewed and approved by the responsible engineer or purchaser.

It is also important to confirm the required dimensions, quantity, mill test certificate, inspection requirements, and delivery condition. For welded structural projects, buyers should pay particular attention to the material specification and applicable welding requirements.

In short, SS490 may be suitable for general structural applications, while SM490 is often considered for welded structural construction. The correct choice depends on the design and applicable standard, not just the similarity of the grade names.
