JIS SS490 Steel Plate: A Complete Buying Guide for International Buyers

Purchasing JIS SS490 steel plate from an overseas supplier requires more than comparing prices per ton. International buyers should verify the material specification, dimensions, documentation, delivery schedule, and supplier's ability to meet the project requirements.

Confirm the applicable standard first. SS490 is specified under JIS G 3101, but buyers should confirm the applicable edition and product requirements with their engineering team. If a project specifies a particular standard or grade, a similar grade from another standard should not automatically be treated as an equivalent replacement.

Specify the required dimensions. An accurate request for quotation should include thickness, width, length, quantity, and total tonnage. Buyers should also state whether they need standard plates or custom-cut sizes. Clear dimensional information allows suppliers to calculate material weight and provide more accurate pricing.

Check certificates and quality documentation. Request a mill test certificate (MTC) showing the material identification and applicable test results. Confirm that the grade, dimensions, heat number, and other relevant information match the purchase order. If third-party inspection or additional testing is required, specify it before production.

Evaluate the supplier's delivery capability. Ask whether the required SS490 plates are available from stock or need to be produced. Check the estimated lead time, export packing method, shipping arrangements, and delivery destination. For urgent projects, stock availability and processing capability may be just as important as the unit price.
