Material properties of ASTM A36 steel

Material properties of ASTM A36 steel

ASTM A36 steel belongs to the general strength low carbon steel with carbon content less than 0.3%. ASTM A36 steel is quite soft, easy to form, process and weld. Heat treatment has little effect on ASTM A36 steel. ASTM A36 steel also contains manganese, sulfur, phosphorus, silicon and other alloy elements. Iron and these elements together form the unique material properties of ASTM A36 steel, unlike stainless steel containing nickel and chromium elements, it does not have good corrosion resistance. If you need corrosion resistance, spraying with a coating is a good choice.

Material properties of ASTM A36 steel - chemical composition:

Grade Thickness C Mn P S Si Cu
A36 less than 3/4 inch 0.25 ~ 0.04 0.05 0.4 0.2
more than 3/4 inch 0.25 0.80~1.20 0.04 0.05 0.4 0.2

Material properties of ASTM A36 steel - mechanical properties:

Tensile Strength: 58,000 - 80,000 psi
Min. Yield Point: 36,000 psi *
Elongation in 2": 23%
* Yield Point 32,000 psi for plates over 8 in.

The ultimate tensile strength of qualified ASTM A36 steel products should be between 58000 psi and 79,800 psi. Because of A36 steel chemical composition and production method, the strength is not an accurate number. In the tensile test, ASTM A36 steel bar can extend to about 20% of the original length. A36 steel also exhibits excellent impact strength at room temperature.
