Start with the Paperwork
Quality begins with documentation. A legitimate mill test certificate should accompany every coil, listing chemical composition, mechanical properties, and heat number. Verify that tensile strength falls within the expected 410-520 MPa range and that the material meets DIN EN 10051 or applicable specifications. Missing or vague paperwork is a red flag.
Check Surface Condition
Unload the coil and inspect the surface carefully. Quality SPH275 shows consistent mill scale without heavy pitting, deep seams, or laminations. Minor scale and light discoloration are normal, but localized defects that break the surface continuity warrant rejection. Run a hand across the surface—excessive roughness or flaking scale suggests poor processing control.
Verify Dimensions
Thickness tolerances tell you a lot about mill quality. Using a micrometer, take measurements across the width and along the coil length. Quality material stays within DIN EN 10051 tolerances—for a 3mm plate, expect deviations no greater than ±0.17mm to ±0.22mm depending on width. Consistent gauge across the coil indicates proper rolling mill calibration.
Test a Sample
Before committing to large production runs, test a small section. Quality SPH275 bends without edge cracking at recommended radii. Laser cutting produces clean edges with minimal dross. Welding should proceed with standard parameters and produce sound, porosity-free joints. Poor performance in these simple tests often signals off-spec material.
Know Your Supplier
Reputation matters. Established mills with consistent quality systems deliver reliable SPH275. If the price seems too good to be true, the material probably is. Building relationships with trusted distributors who stand behind their product pays off over the long run.
