The most important quality document is the valid Mill Test Certificate (MTC). It must confirm compliance with API 5L standards, listing actual chemical composition and mechanical properties that meet or exceed the minimum requirements for Grade A. The certificate should also include heat numbers for full traceability.
Physical inspection should focus on the plate’s appearance. Check for uniform dimensions, smooth edges, and the permanent marking, which should include the standard (API 5L), grade (A), manufacturer’s name or trademark, and heat number. Ensure the surface is free from excessive rust, deep pits, cracks, laminations, or other significant defects that could compromise performance. Minor, shallow surface imperfections are often acceptable and can be addressed during fabrication.
Engaging a reputable and certified supplier is essential. They can provide not only the correct documentation but also offer technical support and assurance of product consistency. For critical applications, third-party inspection or additional testing (such as ultrasonic inspection) may be warranted.
