Introduction to A36 Steel Plate

Introduction to A36 Steel Plate

ASTM 36 is the American standard carbon structural plate.

A36 steel plate application

This standard applies to riveted, bolted and welded structures for bridges and buildings, as well as structural steel quality carbon steel sections, plates and bars for general purposes.

The yield of A36 steel plate is about 240MP, and its yield value will decrease with the increase of the thickness of the material. Due to the moderate carbon content, the comprehensive performance is good, and the strength, plasticity and welding properties are well matched, and it is the most widely used.

A36 steel plate impact test

Charpy V-notch specimens were used for the impact toughness test. The impact toughness index is Akv. For the above-mentioned B, C and D grade steels, Akv≥27J is required under their respective different temperature requirements.

At different impact temperatures, ASTMA36 belongs to the American standard carbon structural plate, which implements the standard ASTM A36/A36M-03a.

The tensile strength of A36 is 58~80 Ksi (about 400~550MPa), and the yield strength is 36 Ksi (about 250MPa).

The tensile strength of Q235 is 370~500 MPa, and the yield strength is 235 MPa.

The tensile strength of SS400 is 400~510 MPa, and the yield strength is 245 MPa.

These three materials can often substitute for each other in real life.

Chemical composition of A36 steel plate:

C: ≤ 0.25, Si ≤ 0.40, Mn: ≤ 0.80-1.20, P ≤ 0.04, S: ≤ 0.05, Cu ≥ 0.20 (when copper-containing steel is specified).

Mechanical properties:

Yield strength: ≥250.

Tensile strength: 400-550.

Elongation: ≥20.

In the national standard, the material similar to A36 is Q235.
